Farewell Dr. Hans Bhardwaj!
IRRI Rice Breeding Innovations Director plans to retire

After a significant number of years as the valued head of Rice Breeding Innovations, the largest of IRRI's teams,  Dr. Hans Bhardwaj is set to retire effective January 13th, 2025 to begin the next chapter of his life with a focus on his children and grandchildren and undoubtedly on a happy and well-earned retirement.

Hans has served IRRI with unwavering commitment and support by providing his world-class talent and four decades of global seed industry experience in steering the Rice Breeding Innovation department since January 2019. He has successfully grown both its staff and the success of its pipelines, platforms, and network of partners, as well as enhancing IRRI's ability to produce innovations at enhanced speed, not to mention the significant growth in the funding it has raised.

A mentor at the professional level, Hans along with his wife Swati, also provided a haven of care and concern within the IRRI community. His huge contributions to IRRI both in the context of its research, principles, and values has brought so much inspiration to all the many young people he has invested his time and energy in.

IRRI is extremely grateful for his leadership, mentorship, teamwork, and the discipline he has brought. Hans, in recent months, has worked tirelessly as one of the co-convenors of CGIAR's 'Breeding for Tomorrow' program for the CGIAR Portfolio Design 2025-30. IRRI thanks him for this enormous effort for this mega-programme, which is the bedrock of CGIAR's contributions to society.

All the best, Hans!
